WPSA and Turning Stone Resort appeared to have spared no expense in preparing for the event and the best track of the season to date greeted the riders Saturday morning.
Saturdays racing would have Pro Stock round robin qualifying and LCQ, the semi-pro stock class, round robin, LCQ and the final.
All three BMRT pro riders qualified for the final on Sunday, Blair Morgan on the front row, Iain Hayden and Dave Allard riding with a cast on his broken left wrist] on the back row having raced successfully through the LCQ.
BMRT semi-pro stock rider Brett Turcotte, did not make the final today and had to watch from the sidelines as Polaris rider Brett Bender cruised unchallenged to the checkered flag.
Sunday morning at 11am under blue skies the Pro Stock finalists took to the field. On green Tucker Hibbert’s #68 got the holeshot, Blair Morgan in the top five. Morgan worked hard for 5 laps to get around a pesky Mike Shultz for the third position, and closed up a 6 second gap to Ryan Simons Arctic to less than 2 by race end but that was as close as he could get. Tucker cruised in with an 8 second lead over Simons and Morgan. Morgan’s BMRT teammates Hayden and Allard toiled away in the snowdust from their backrow starts to 9th and 11th place finishes respectively.
Semi-pro Mod was up next and BMRT rider Brett Turcotte had made the final on the front row. On green, a mid pack start soon turned worse as Brett was knocked off his sled at the far end of the track placing him at the end of the pack. Brett rode hard and aggressive working himself back into the top ten by race end. Polaris rider Chris Kafka got his first win of the season, just beating Katejun Coonishish across the line.
Pro Open would again be the last race of the weekend and BMRT riders Blair Morgan and Dave Allard had made the final. The #93 of Iain Hayden was sidelined for the final after a miscue while leading the LCQ race.
On green, Tucker Hibberts #68 again found it’s way out of the first corner with the lead….. and he checked out literally, cruising in with a 20 second cushion at the checkers. All the action was behind him, and it was Blair Morgan who was creating all the excitement! Blair had come out of the first corner with a decent 4th place start, but part way through the first lap, the #5 Polaris of Mike Shultz suddenly quit collecting a surprised Morgan and allowing a number of riders by before Blair could get going again.
Blair now found himself barely inside the top ten, but there were still 15 laps to go….. Working his way quickly and carefully through the snow dust, with two laps to go Blair found himself in 4th place, on the heels of Shaun Crapo and Garth Kaufman. Blair had found a fast line on one stretch, tripling a series of jumps that no one else was doing. On the 15th lap he tripled his way past a surprised Shaun Crapo into 3rd, and on the 16th lap with the white last lap flag waving he passed an equally surprised Garth Kaufman in the very same spot. Blair cruised in for a well deserved second place finish behind an elated Hibbert who had just completed a very rare sweep of the weekend, having won all of his 6 heat races and both his finals, something only Morgan had accomplished in the past. BMRT rider Dave Allard worked his way into 9th at race end from his back row start.
This will be Tucker Hibberts last race this season as he will now head off to compete in the AMA East Supercross series. BMRT will head further east with a bit of momentum in their steps from the positive results this weekend. The home of SKIDOO, Valcourt QC is the next stop on the tour and the team is excited to FINALLY debut the new 2007 open mod race sleds, and retire their well worn 2006 mounts.
