Round 6 on the WPSA Tour brought the team out east to the birthplace of Ski-Doo snowmobiles in Valcourt, Quebec, Canada.
While the 24 hour drive for the team is a little grueling, the chance to perform at our best in front of the friendly Quebec motorsports fans and the Ski-Doo factory people that support our team is a welcome oppurtunity.
The weather Saturday and Sunday was very cold and brisk winds made conditions even tougher on the teams. The cold temps cause very dusty snow conditions with poor visibility, making a good start critical.
First up was semi-pro stock class, and all three team members, Coonishish, Elam and Turcotte qualified well. At the start of the final, Elam got the holeshot with Turcotte on his heels, Coonishish midpack. Turcotte snuck under Elam on the second corner and the two team mates left the field in their dust. A close race ensued between the two, Elam often choosing to not make aggressive pass attempts on Brett that would have surely been attempted on a non team mate competitor, perhaps Brett will get the opportunity to repay the courtesy. Coonishish worked hard getting through he pack, he got into fourth and just missed getting third at the finish line and a BMR team sweep of the podium.
Pro stock qualifying was next up, Allard, Morgan and Taylor all did great transferring to Sunday’s main abeit Taylor through the LCQ which a first turn incident in heat two forced him into.
Sunday started with Semi-pro Open, Turcott front row of the main, Coonishish and Elam back row after running 1-2 in the LCQ. At the start Turcotte found himself near the front in a heated battle with 3 Arctic Cats…. Elam and Coonishish mired at the back in the snow dust. Turcotte came off early in the race, Elam and Coonishish started working their way through the pack. At the ¾ mark of the race kaos erupted, the lead Arctic Cat (Jeff Snow) lost an engine mid-flight over the table top finish line, causing him to crash collecting the 2nd and 3rd place runners with him. This handed the lead to a surprised Matthew Morin which he held to the finsh, Elam nursed his sputtering snow ingested Rev into 5th spot, Turcotte and Coonishish finished near the back after their crashes.
Pro Stock left the line with Robbie Malinowski getting the holeshot, Morgan on his heels, Allard in 5th and Taylor near the back from his back row start. An exciting race developed between Robbie and Blair, a real cat and mouse game. Morgan watched Robbies lines for a few laps before executing a perfect inside pass on the tricky right hander before the finish line and steadily pulling away for his first stock class win of ’06. Taylor put his head down and worked steadily through the pack from his back row start for a well deserved 5th, Dave Allard after running in the top five, finished near the back after being taken out late in the race in a fashion that the native Quebecer was very displeased with.
Pro Open saw Morgan grap the holeshot and check out for a convincing win, perhaps boring for the fans but it was a great display of the speed and skill of the wily veteran. Behind Morgan, Ross Martin ran second the entire race, Allard worked his way into third place and started to nip away at the margin between Martins’ Polaris and himself. Lapped riders held up Allard long enough for Malinowski to briefly repass Allard for third, but Dave would have none of it, passing Robbie back for the final podium position before the finish.
With the team getting 5 podiums of a possible 12 podium positions, this time containing 3 wins, the cold temperatures were soon forgotten, smiles were easy to find as they loaded up the transporters and prepared to leave for the next round in Winnipeg Manitoba.
