Duluth, MN to Headline as WPSA Opener for Another Three Years

White Bear Lake, MN – Referred to as the Biggest, Baddest, Boldest, Oldest Snowmobile Terrain Race in the World, Spirit Mountain returns to host the November season openers for the WPSA Snocross Worldwide Championship through 2007.

Visit Duluth (formerly The Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau), Spirit Mountain and the World Snowmobile Association have created a seamless bond built throughout the many years working as a team. This bond has been nurtured by a common vision of excellence in producing the Spirit Mountain Opener each Thanksgiving weekend since 1998.

WPSA CEO Scott O’Malley stated; “Spirit Mountain is where it all starts. This is where we benchmark the season and our expectations for the coming year. The AMSOIL Duluth National is our cornerstone and I am delighted to have locked down our three year agreement.”

With phenomenal city skyline views, home town hospitality and the first opportunity of the year to preview the drivers and equipment, fans arrive by the bus-load. Renee Appel Mattson,Executive Director of the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area added: “Spirit Mountain is thrilled to have a three year contract with WPSA for the Duluth National Snocross. This event brings thousands of visitors to Duluth and provides an enormous economic benefit to the city. We here at Spirit Mountain value our partnership with Visit Duluth and WPSA and will continue to work to
make this the premier event on the WPSA schedule.”

Although WPSA has been sanctioning the season opener since 1998, this event has been taking place since 1992. Terry Mattson, President of Visit Duluth is one of the original founding members of this historical event. Terry stated: “Visit Duluth values its partnership with WPSA, Spirit Mountain, AMSOIL and the many stakeholders. It’s an important event for a multitude of reasons. Everyone, including our fans, will benefit from the long term direction.”

The WPSA is the worldwide leader in snowmobile racing. The WPSA SWC tour consists of 10 races and is an international circuit with races held in the United States and Canada. It is the premier snowmobile racing circuit in the world.
